The big four Record Companies
The world music market is dominated by the big four major record labels. These 4 companies control around 70% of the world music market and around 85% of the United States music market:
Sony BMI Music : (Germany/Japan) - revenues ~$9 billion  (2000) - 28% of US Market .
Sony BMG Music Entertainment is the result of a 50/50 joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment (part of Sony) and BMG Entertainment (part of Bertelsmann AG) completed on August 5, 2004. It is one of the Big Four music companies, and includes ownership and distribution of recording labels such as Arista Records, Columbia Records, Epic Records, J Records, RCA Victor, RCA Records, and others.
Warner Music Group : (USA) - revenues $2.6 billion (2005) - 16% of US Market - 4,000 Employees
Warner Music Group is one of the four major record labels. Its labels include Warner Bros. Records, Reprise Records, Sire Records, Atlantic Records, Elektra Records, London Records, Rhino Entertainment, Warner Music Australia, Word Entertainment, Warner Western and others.
WMG also has a publishing arm, Warner-Chappell Music. Its printed music operation, Warner Bros. Publications, was sold to Alfred Publishing on December 16, 2004.
EMI Group UK : revenues $3.8 billion (2004) - 7% of US Market - 8,000 Employees
The EMI Group is a major record label, based in Hammersmith, London, in the United Kingdom and with operations in over 25 other countries. EMI Group is one of the Big Four record labels.
Universal Music (France/USA) - revenues $6.8 billion (2004) - 34% of US Market - 10,700 Employees
Universal Music Group (UMG) formerly MCA Music Entertainment (see Music Corporation of America). is the largest major label in the record industry, with a 23% market share it is one of the Big Four record labels. It is owned by the Vivendi Universal. They have some of the world's biggest artists including Aerosmith, Mariah Carey, Eminem, Luciano Pavarotti and U2. It also own one of the largest music publishing businesses of the world, the Universal Music Publishing Group.
